(NewsWorthy.news) – Several House Democrats have suggested that they may not certify a 2024 election victory from Donald Trump. President Joe Biden and the Democrats have referred to Trump as a threat to democracy over his claims about election fraud in 2020.
Multiple Democrats including South Carolina Representative James Clyburn, Maryland Representative Jamie Raskin, California Representatives Adam Schiff, Eric Swalwell, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries refused to state whether they would confirm Trump to office in the event he wins the 2024 election. Basing their claims on the 14th Amendment, the Democrats argue that Trump is an insurrectionist and therefore ineligible for office.
Concerns about legitimacy come from both parties; despite distancing himself from Trump’s claims in August 2023 when he was running as a Republican presidential candidate, Ron DeSantis in January 2024 joined Vivek Ramaswamy in expressing concerns about potential election fraud. DeSantis and Ramaswamy, who both stood down and publicly endorsed Trump, questioned whether Biden could realistically win the 2024 election through legitimate means and vowed to stand up to electoral fraud if it occurs.
Presidential candidate Nikky Haley, however, said that she would accept the 2024 election result. Attorney Jonathan Mitchell has argued on Trump’s behalf that Section 3 of the 14th Amendment refers to appointed officials rather than elected officials. The Democratic National Committee has also attacked its independent opposition and made a complaint about former Democratic candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The DNC claimed not only that Kennedy’s Super Pac was working too closely with his campaign but that it was also being propped up by a Trump donor to “siphon” votes from Biden’s campaign.
Dan McLaughlin of the National Review argued that Democrats could vote to sustain an objection if they gain a majority on the House. McLaughlin noted, however, that a majority of at least 51 senators would need to object and that this would be no easy task for the Democrats if they wish to successfully prevent a Trump victory from being certified.
