Dem Senator Voices Urgency for Ukraine Funding

(NewsWorthy.news) – Democratic West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin has warned that the U.S. must do more to support Ukraine in its war against Russia or risk facing the “worst atrocity in history.”

Manchin told host Niala Boodhoo at Axios’ annual What’s Next Summit in Washington D. C. how dire the situation will be if the White House hasn’t helped Ukraine by the summer of 2024. Congress is currently deadlocked over sending more aid to Ukraine due to resistance from Republican representatives, resulting in the $95 billion aid package passed by the Senate being stalled since February 2024.

Senate minority leader and Republican Senator Mitch McConnell has repeatedly asked House Speaker Mike Johnson to bring the aid package to a vote. The Louisiana Representative has acknowledged the urgency of the funding and predicted that Vladimir Putin will not stop at Ukraine if he is allowed a victory in the war. Johnson stated that the standalone vote on aid to Israel and Ukraine will need to be on suspension, which means it will require a two-thirds majority to vote in favor of the package, including wide Democratic support.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said after meeting with former President Donald Trump that the 2024 presidential candidate would not be giving any money to Ukraine if elected. The Speaker has been told to lead or get out of the way as pressure mounts over the proposed aid package. A main focal point of Republicans opposed to the aid is the border crisis.

Senior Republican Senator Lindsey Graham stressed to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that he was not the problem. Graham called on President Joe Biden to become personally involved in the negotiations and highlighted the failure of the Democrats to control the southern border. Johnson echoed the same sentiments, stressing that while they stood with Ukraine against Putin, they expected U.S. border security to be properly invested in.

Manchin, who decided to retire at the end of his term as senator, suggested Biden is too far to the left and that risks dooming his 2024 election campaign.

Close allies of the U.S. are pleading with Congress to support the aid package; UK Foreign Secretary and former Prime Minister Lord Cameron has stated that he will drop “diplomatic niceties” and compared those against sending aid to Ukraine to Hitler appeasers.
