Dem Candidate, Taxi Driver File Police Reports On Each Other

(NewsWorthy.news) – Newly uncovered police reports reveal that a Democrat running for state Congress was previously accused of attacking a taxi driver.

Sen. Tony Vargas of Nebraska, who is currently campaigning for GOP Rep. Don Bacon’s seat in the House of Representatives, was involved in an argument about payment with a cab driver a decade ago that resulted in both filing police reports and accusing one another of assault.

The incident that came to light with the uncovering of the documents by Fox News Digital took place on May 10, 2013. On that evening, Vargas reportedly argued with the driver about payment, resulting in the taxi taking both of them to a police station.

Despite denied claims from the senator’s representatives, the driver’s report described the lawmaker having “jumped” from his place in the back of the vehicle to the front, incidentally, kicking the driver in the head as he did so. Vargas was also accused of damaging the driver’s laptop and grasping him by his shirt collar. According to the police officer who handled the report, the driver was unscathed as was his computer.

Vargas’ report, however, stated that he requested the cab driver stop multiple times but that he drove to the police station instead. The senator then said that, upon stopping and then continuing to drive fast, Vargas “hit his head” and was later encouraged by police to seek medical attention.

No clear charges of assault were filed, although both the lawmaker and the taxi driver indicated in their reports that they accused one another of this crime.

In comments made to Fox News Digital, Delanie Bomar of the National Republican Congressional Committee said that Vargas’ “violent temper” has “no shot” of managing opposing views that appear in Congress if he “can’t even” handle paying a taxi fare “without a physical altercation.” She added that the lawmaker is “extreme” and “aggressive.”

Attorney Daniel Gutman, who represents the Nebraska politician’s campaign, defended his client against what he described as a “baseless claim,” adding that Vargas was “the clear victim” in the incident.
