(NewsWorthy.news) – Caitlyn Jenner has shown support for a local New York official’s order banning female sports teams that include transgender athletes from using the county’s facilities. The ban, which applies to over 100 athletic facilities in the suburbs of New York City’s Long Island, does not apply to men’s sports teams featuring transgender athletes.
Covering all Nassau County-owned facilities, the ban covers ballfields, ice rinks, swimming pools, and basketball and tennis courts. Any teams classed as female will be denied permits if they feature transgender athletes. Jenner stated that allowing transgender athletes to compete in female categories would “ruin women’s sports” in the future. The reality star, who came out as transgender in 2015, stressed the need to stop the inclusion of transgender athletes in female categories.
A women’s roller derby league has filed a lawsuit calling on a New York court to invalidate the Republican official’s order. The Long Island Roller Rebels claimed that the order violates the state’s civil rights and human rights laws against discrimination. The executive order was issued on February 22 by Bruce Blakeman. In March 2024, World Athletics President Sebastian Coe asserted that the organization’s policy on transgender athletes is “here to stay.”
In 2023 World Athletics announced that athletes would be prohibited from competing in women’s world rankings competitions if they had gone through male puberty. The move banned many transgender athletes from competing in female track and field events. Jenner has a mixed reaction among transgender activists, some of whom call on the former athlete to do more to utilize a “privileged” position to benefit transgender communities.
Jenner was accused of abandoning the transgender community to get Republican votes after announcing a bid for California Governor in 2021 and arguing that biological boys should not be allowed to compete in girls’ sports. Transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney, who triggered a boycott of Nike in 2023 after donning women’s leggings and sports bra in several posts, attacked Jenner for “publicly degrading” the trans community. Jenner had previously criticized the influencer’s calls to normalize “women with bulges” and called Mulvaney “trans with a penis.”
The New York Civil Liberties Union, which filed the lawsuit for Long Island Roller Rebels, claimed Jenner’s appearance was another attempt to “villainize” transgender “women” and “girls.” Democratic Attorney General Letitia James, who is investigating Donald Trump in Georgia for his alleged election interference, called Blakeman’s order discriminatory and “transphobic.”
