(NewsWorthy.news) – Comedic actor Tony Ganios died at the age of 64 in a New York hospital, according to his fiancée.
The news was announced on February 20 via X. Ganios’ bride-to-be, Amanda Serrano, shared that the actor had died suddenly two days before after having surgery for a sudden, intense infection.
Ganios is best remembered for his starring roles in “Porky’s” and “The Wanderers.”
Through an image of the couple’s clasped hands and numerous responses to condolences posted on X, Serrano explained that Ganios had been feeling ill but “hid it” from his fiancée “for days.” Upon disclosing his sickness and being taken to the hospital, it was discovered that the actor had a “severely infected” spinal cord.
He was taken into surgery and, after surviving the procedure, went into cardiac arrest the next day, when “his heart stopped,” according to Serrano. She further detailed that Ganios died on his way to receive dialysis treatment and reportedly suffered from additional organ failure.
Serrano emphasized that the unexpected tragedy had left her “broken,” noting that their last words to each other were “I love you.” The couple had been dating for roughly nine years and were in the process of planning their wedding when the actor died.
Ganios is remembered for his acting career, particularly his parts in teen comedies released in the 1980s. His first film was “The Wanderers,” a drama about an Italian gang in the Bronx that is based on a Richard Price novel by the same name.
The young actor famously appeared as the character of Meat in “Porky’s,” a comedy from 1981 which followed high schoolers in their efforts to exact revenge on the owner of a nightclub following a backfired stunt to influence their innocent friend. Ganios also appeared the film’s sequel, which came out two years later.
The actor left the profession before the turn of the century but is still remembered by his few iconic roles. He was reportedly supposed to reunite with “Porky’s” cast and crew members at a reunion in the coming weeks.
