Abbott Pardons Killer of BLM Protester

(NewsWorthy.news) – Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott pardoned on May 16 a man who Democratic authorities convicted of killing a Black Lives Matter demonstrator who was approaching his vehicle while carrying an automatic rifle. The 35-year-old US Army Sergeant Daniel Perry was convicted on a murder charge in Travis County for the incident and was formally sentenced to 25 years behind bars.

Since the incident took place, Perry consistently insisted that all he did was defend himself as the protester represented an imminent threat, as the person had an AK-47. Some journalists who covered the incident said that the sergeant turned himself in to the police after calling 911 right after he killed the BLM protester.

In a statement, Abbott said that he made the decision after an in-depth review conducted by the state Board of Pardons and Paroles on Perry’s history and every single detail surrounding the killing of the demonstrator back in July 2020. The conservative leader added that the board recommended him to pardon Perry after reviewing numerous files provided by the District Attorney of Travis County as well as the testimony Perry delivered during his trial. The Texas governor also said in his statement that the so-called Lone Star State has strong self-defense laws that won’t be “nullified” by any Democratic District Attorney or progressive jury.

In an affidavit, the case’s main detective David Fugitt said that District Attorney Jose Garza didn’t act properly in the case and even showed “criminal behavior.” Fugitt added that it became clear to him that Garza didn’t want to give the grand jury exculpatory evidence about Perry after having several conversations about the matter with him.

The detective even claimed that the office of the Travis County Attorney directed him on numerous occasions to remove the exculpatory evidence of his testimony. He also revealed that the office eliminated almost every single exculpatory information from his “PowerPoint presentation,” which he considered criminal conduct.
