(NewsWorthy.news) – The House has passed a resolution to condemn President Joe Biden over the border crisis. Republicans were joined by 14 Democrats in denouncing both Biden and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for what the resolution concluded was a refusal to utilize executive powers to manage the “chaos” on the border.
Resolution sponsor and Republican Texas Representative Monica De La Cruz said in a statement that the resolution underscored the “urgent” need for the president to take “decisive action” to deal with the crisis. The House already passed a resolution with a 225-187 vote in January 2024 denouncing the open-border policies of the Biden administration, again with the support of 14 Democrats.
The latest resolution passed on a 226-193 vote. The 14 Democrat representatives who voted in favor of the resolution included Yadira Caraveo of Colorado, Angie Craig of Minnesota, Henry Cuellar of Texas, Sharice Davids of Kansas, Don Davis of North Carolina, Jared Golden of Maine, and Steven Horsford and Susie Lee of Nevada.
Cuellar also set up an advisory group in March. He told reporters on the day of the vote that Democrats should talk about strong border control while being respectful towards immigrants’ rights.
The Biden administration has blamed the border crisis on Congress not passing a bill to allow border security provisions. Republicans have, however, claimed that Biden has all the power he requires to control the border. As Republicans in Congress are blamed for impeding Democratic efforts to maintain the border, Republican governors such as Greg Abbott of Texas have been busing migrants up to Democratic-run sanctuary cities. Abbott’s Operation Lone Star, which the governor launched in March 2021 to better control the border despite the Biden administration’s failings, has cost the state $10 billion.
Republicans are blaming Biden’s near-immediate revocation of dozens of the Trump administration’s border security policies for the mounting crisis. They claim that the proposed bill gives the Biden administration too much leeway on border control.
Concerns also persist that Biden’s government will continue with “Catch and Release” policies that promptly free illegal immigrants into the public and American cities while they wait for a verdict on their asylum status. Republican Texas Representative Nathaniel Moran, who introduced the resolution in January, said the very sovereignty of the United States was brought into question by an undermined rule of law and a national safety crisis as a result of Biden’s open border policies.
